The public sector of the future should . . .
- operate in a way that is consistent with democratic principles and values

- have the right capabilities to match the scale and complexities of national policy, program and delivery tasks

Robert Sutton on "The business of being a boss"

Defintely worth a listen - Robert Sutton is an insightful observer and commentator on organisational issues, and is the author of the A.R.S.E (Asshole Rating Self-Exam) test.

His observations on the significant and disproportionate negative impact of "jerk" behaviour on organisational performance have direct relevance for the APS and public sector organisations generally.

Is the APS ready for the future?

The APS SOS survey addresses the question of whether or not the APS is ready for the future, but does it in a way that doesn't elicit a definitive response.

The question I regularly ask my colleagues and contacts in and around the APS (at SES, EL and APS levels) is:

"Do you believe the APS is capable of effectively addressing the policy tasks of the next decade in its current mode of operation?"

The consistent answer, generally delivered without hesitation, is "NO".… Continue

“We can't solve problems by using the same kind of thinking we used when we created them.” Albert Einstein

This apocryphal quote from Albert Einstein is a nice way of stating Stafford Beer's cybernetic proposition that real systemic change can only be effected at the metasystem level - not within individual system 'boxes'.

Hi David

Hope some people get on board with the accommodation discussion. I come from a perspective where I think if we invested a little more in ensuring people's work environment engaged and motivated them ..... the increases seen in peformance would be great. I have often read and look at the google model. It get some bad press about encouraging workaholics but if these people are enjoying what thet are doing and not suffering from any stress or injuries from work ...what is the problem?

I should probably go post this on the discussion board - my fingers typed away on me!

Welcome
Cheers, Kylie
